Dr. Guy Lewis is a premier cosmetic dentist based in The Woodlands, Texas. An innovator and world-renowned leader in cosmetic dentistry, Dr. Lewis creates stunning, custom-designed smiles that are as durable and functional as they are beautiful. Dr. Lewis and his team also help patients keep their smiles healthy for life, with state-of-the-art general dentistry.

Nu Image: You’re an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD). What does this mean to consumers who are interested in getting cosmetic dentistry?
Dr. Lewis: The AACD isn’t just one of those important sounding accreditations or certificates that simply involve writing a check or attending a weekend seminar. The AACD is the gold standard in cosmetic dentistry accreditation and the world’s largest cosmetic dental association with members from approximately 70 countries. Being an accredited AACD member is a distinguished honor held by less than 300 dentists worldwide. The AACD’s accreditation process is unique and rigorous. It’s the only cosmetic dental organization that tests dentists to see if their skill level meets high standards. There’s a written test and you have to present cases before board accreditation.

Nu Image: It seems like every dentist today claims to be cosmetic dentist. How can this be?
Dr. Lewis: The American Dental Association does not recognize cosmetic dentistry as a formal specialty; therefore, any general dentist can deem themselves a cosmetic dentist. This is why it’s so important to look for a cosmetic dentist who is AACD-accredited.

Nu Image: Doesn’t experience also count?
Dr. Lewis: Yes, if it goes hand-in-hand with quality work. Someone can have years of experience doing something in a sub-par fashion. They can also claim to have years of experience, when in reality, the experience only consists of doing handful of cosmetic cases a year.

Nu Image: How many cases have you done and do you think poor quality cosmetic dentistry has become a problem in the U.S.?
Dr. Lewis: I’ve completed thousands of cases over the span of three decades. I can’t say if poor quality cosmetic dentistry is a rampant problem, but a large percentage of the cases I do today involve fixing problems created elsewhere. For example, the biggest complaint that most patient’s have is veneers that look thick and bulky like chicklets and continue to pop off.  Patients get tired of that, so they come to me to have them redone. You wouldn’t believe it but I’ve actually had patients come see me the very same day they had veneers put on elsewhere. It’s a shame and surprising but they are literally in tears because their teeth look so bad. Poor cosmetic dentistry is like trying to put socks on a rooster—it just doesn’t look right or fit right.

Nu Image: People are looking for value today. How does this play into cosmetic dentistry?
Dr. Lewis: Getting value for your money doesn’t mean getting the cheapest thing out there—a discount bargain-basement smile. You usually get what you pay for. This applies to dentistry along with other things in life. Value in cosmetic dentistry means getting results that look natural and fit your face and personality, and that are designed to be durable and long-lasting as well as aesthetically appealing.

Using veneers as an example, well-done veneers can last for decades if properly cared for. No set of veneers will last forever, but I can honestly say that to my knowledge, my patients have had very few problems. With the thousands of smile makeovers I’ve done, from routine cases to the most complex cases you can imagine, I’ve never had to replace a full set of veneers that I’ve done yet.

Nu Image: You’re often credited with developing the “dental spa” concept. What’s behind this?
Dr. Lewis: A visit to the dentist doesn’t mean a trip to the dungeon! People may experience feelings of anxiety and fear when they visit the dentist—usually due to bad experiences elsewhere in the past. We want to help our patients feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. Offering spa services along with other comforts such as warm blankets, help patients relax and feel at ease.

Nu Image: You also do dental implants—the gold standard for replacing missing teeth. What about teeth in a day, a dental implant solution for denture wearers?
Dr. Lewis: Yes, we offer implant-retained dentures, but we have a new option that is significantly different from the kind you find at most clinics. These dentures we create are made from solid, all-zirconium porcelain. They don’t crack and break, or harbor bacteria like old-fashioned dentures. They also have a lustrous, life-like appearance, just like your natural teeth. Acrylic material, in my opinion, doesn’t come close to the natural look of layered all-zirconium porcelain. Plus the design is different. Instead of bulky plastic that covers the roof of your mouth, our implant supported dentures are shaped like a horseshoe so nothing covers your palate. This increases your ability to taste food better as well as chew your food better.

Nu Image: Is there anything else you would like to mention to our readers?
Dr. Lewis: We have an exceptional staff. Many have been with me for years. They have the same dedication to high-quality dental care as I do, and offer the level of friendly, personalized service that we have become known for.

Dr. Lewis has been creating smiles and changing lives for 30 years. He earned his Doctor of Dentistry from Baylor College of Dentistry and is a founding and an accredited member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD).

A frequent lecturer and an adjunct professor at Baylor Dental School in Dallas, Dr. Lewis appears on local television programs as a subject matter expert, was featured in Newsweek magazine’s “10 Nationwide Leaders in Dentistry and Surgery” showcase, and has served as the official cosmetic dentist for the Houston Astros, Rockets, Aeros and Dynamo, as well as the Miss Texas Pageant, Miss Teen Texas Pageant, and Miss Hawaiian Tropic. Dr. Lewis has received numerous recognitions and awards, such as Super Dentist by Texas Monthly and Houston Top Doc in cosmetic dentistry.

Dr. Lewis is the only dentist to receive the BBB (Better Business Bureau) Awards for Excellence Winner of Distinction every year since the award was introduced. In 2012, he received the BBB Pinnacle Award; the highest accolade available for outstanding quality and customer service. The BBB is the marketplace watchdog that encourages and supports best practices, celebrates marketplace role models, and denounces substandard marketplace behavior.

Dr. Christopher K. Patronella, Dr. Henry A. Mentz, III, and Dr. Germán Newall, founded the Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery (ACPS) in 1996. Their goal was to offer a comprehensive approach to plastic surgery with a focus on patient safety and remarkable quality of care. Today, ACPS is ranked as one of the largest private plastic surgery centers in Texas, where each surgeon has impeccable credentials and a proven track record of good outcomes with natural-looking results. Working closely together, ACPS’s renowned team of surgeons has over 113 years of combined experience, with the three founding partners having practiced together since 1991. It’s common for them to consult with one another on various cases, and their patients benefit.

From your initial consultation through post-procedure follow-ups, you will receive world-class care in a comfortable, private setting at ACPS. Services include facial surgery, breast enhancement, and body contouring, as well as a number of products and spa services to help you prepare before surgery, to maintain your new look after surgery, or just to keep you looking and feeling your best. While patient safety is the first concern, confidentiality, convenience, and personalized attention to your comfort are also important. For this reason, ACPS includes a private, state-of-the-art SurgiCentre certified by the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc.

As if all this wasn’t enough, the visionary surgeons at ACPS are passionate about innovation and dedicated to the improvement of plastic surgery in the national and international communities. The ACPS Research Center coordinates a renowned teaching and mentoring program for plastic surgeons from around the world. Their research has yielded an impressive volume of published papers and articles in peer reviews and more, many of which discuss surgical innovations that enhance patient safety.

Dr. Newall is an ACPS founding partner and recognized as one of Houston’s leading plastic surgeons. Board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons, he is a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS), and an American Association Fellow, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

A founding ACPS partner, Dr. Mentz is America’s first triple-boarded plastic surgeon. He is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and the American Board of Otolaryngololgy-Head and Neck Surgery. Dr. Mentz has written medical text book chapters and is a frequent speaker at the major plastic surgery conferences.

Dr. Patronella is an ACPS founding member and managing partner. Dr. Patronella is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS) and the International College of Surgeons (FICS). He is a member of the American Society for Plastic Surgeons, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Lipoplasty Society of North America, American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery, and is President of the Houston Society of Plastic Surgeons.

Dr. Fortes is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and by the American Board of Surgery. He has had one of the most extensive training periods of 8 years in surgical residency, including three years of specialization in plastic surgery at Northwestern Medical Center in Chicago.

Dr. Morales was drawn to the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery at an early age. After training with the physicians of ACPS, the group was so impressed with his surgical results and work ethic that they welcomed him into their private practice. Dr. Morales is active in research to improve the safety and outcomes of surgical patients. This year he has the honor of presenting his research at the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery annual meeting in New York.

Few things offer a more powerful, positive, long-lasting impact on your appearance and self-confidence than a straight, beautiful smile. In fact, every gorgeous smile starts with straight teeth. Recognized as one of the country’s top 10 Invisalign providers at the annual AAO meeting in 2002, Dr. Ray McLendon remains in the top 1 % of all providers of Invisalign, having completed thousands of Invisalign cases over the last decade. In fact, he has earned the esteemed designation of Invisalign Super Elite Provider, given by the makers of Invisalign.

In addition to Invisalign for teens and adults, Dr. McLendon and his highly skilled team provide a wide range of quality orthodontic services including regular and clear braces.

Nu Image: You’re known throughout Greater Houston and beyond as the “go-to” destination for quality orthodontics. What’s one of the things people commonly misunderstand about your practice?
Dr. McLendon: There are a couple of things. First, because we’ve earned the Super Elite Invisalign Provider designation, people assume we only do Invisalign. We offer a variety of orthodontic services, including clear braces, which are made of ceramic materials and therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces.

I’d say about 30 percent of our cases are Invisalign, the rest involve regular braces. In fact, because the foundation of our practice is in braces and traditional orthodontic treatments, we’ve been able to excel with Invisalign.

Nu Image: What’s the other misconception?
Dr. McLendon: Another misconception is that since we’re known as a premier orthodontic group, people assume our services are very expensive. This isn’t the case. Our fees are fair and competitive, plus we work hard to offer flexible payment plans. We also accept dental insurance plans.

Nu Image: Why is Invisalign so popular?
Dr. McLendon: Invisalign is a significant step up on the aesthetic scale from traditional metal braces. While clear braces can be difficult to see, especially from a distance, Invisalign is nearly impossible to detect, even when you’re up close. Another advantage is that with the Invisalign removable aligners, you can eat what you want and brushing, flossing, and general oral healthcare is easier.

Nu Image: Do you see a lot of patients who come to you for a second opinion who have been told Invisalign won’t work for them?
Dr. McLendon: Well, I think it may be easy for some dentists to say “I don’t think that can be done with Invisalign,” when in truth, they probably don’t have the kind of experience with Invisalign necessary to address the case. You can have experience with Invisalign but only complete a few cases a year. That doesn’t necessarily give you enough experience, in my opinion,  to address anything but routine cases. My dad was an engineer so I’ve always looked at things a little differently, and I have always been willing and interested in trying new things in a safe and effective manner. In fact, I recall years ago that I was doing movements with Invisalign that others thought were impossible, simply because of my vast experience with Invisalign. Rarely do I see a case that can’t be treated with Invisalign.

Nu Image: Are there any services that you typically combine with orthodontics?
Dr. McLendon: There’s both art and science involved in changing a smile. The three elements that make up a beautiful smile are tooth position, tooth shape, and tooth color. Position is addressed with orthodontics. Teeth whitening is an extremely popular combination with orthodontics that can deliver dramatic results. We can also, to a certain extent, address the shape of the tooth by smoothing sharp edges. For many patients, these things are enough to give them the smile they’ve always dreamed of. In other cases, even after orthodontics and teeth whitening, some patients choose to perfect their smile with cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers.

Nu Image: Are there any new innovations in orthodontics you’re excited about and want to share with our readers?
Dr. McLendon: I’m on the advisory board of a company that has developed an extraordinary wafer-shaped mouthpiece called AcceleDent™ that is designed to work with most orthodontics. It’s a vibrating medical device worn in the mouth around 20 minutes a day. AcceleDent generates small vibrations called micropulses that enhance the movements directed by your braces allowing for faster overall treatment. With AcceleDent, we’ve been able to treat Invisalign cases in half the time.

Nu Image: Is there anything else you want to mention to our readers?
Dr. McLendon: We believe quality orthodontics should be as accessible to as many people as possible. Everyone should be able to reap the life-long benefits of a beautiful, straight smile. At Clear Choice Orthodontic Associates, we provide complete orthodontic treatment for adults, teens and children. If you wonder if you or a family member can benefit from orthodontics, we’ve have made it easy to find out. Your consultation is complimentary. We’ll even include x-rays and exams, then give you a no-obligation, no-hassle solution.

An alumnus of Houston Baptist University, University of Texas DentalBranch at Houston, and Rice University, Jones School of Business, Dr. McLendon is considered one of the most experienced Invisalign dentists in the world. He is often requested to speak on the subject of Invisalign, both nationally and internationally, and has trained and certifies new doctors at a number of major dental schools as well as the advanced certifications and workshops for orthodontic specialists. As vice president of clinical programs with Align Technology, the makers of Invisalign, he was responsible for education, training, and clinical support for the entire company.

Dr. McLendon has lectured at most every major national and regionalorthodontic meeting in the country, and several major international meeting. He has served as President of the Texas Association of Orthodontists as well as the Houston Regional Society of Orthodontists, and on the board of directors of the Southwestern Society of Orthodontists. As a leading specialist in orthodontic treatments, Dr. McLendon has been interviewed as an expert by the Houston Chronicle, Newsweek magazine, Vogue, and many more publications.
